The Axis II Steel SI watch is a twist on a conventional ‘steel and black dial’ watch, so instead features an elegant multi-contrast silver coloured face, that changes tone when light reflects off it.
The Swiss-made movement (ETA2824-2) provides reliability of timekeeping and the practicality of being automatically wound plus a subtle display of the date integrated into the dial.
The Axis II is designed, finished and tested in England by Pinion and made in strictly limited numbers.
The Axis II is available in two specifications based on the reverse of the watch. The ‘S’ model has a solid stainless steel case back that is engraved and numbered. However, for more detail, the ‘E’ model has a glass exhibition back, that allows the wearer to view the Swiss automatic movement (ETA 2824-2) with the addition of a Pinion decorated hunter green winding rotor.
The original Axis’ primary focus was simplicity and legibility. The Axis II re-enforces the original but furthers this by the inclusion of subtle details.
The dial, when viewed, appears grey. However, it’s finished with vertical brushings. This polishing effect provides the watch to reflect the light and will appear to change tone depending on the lighting conditions.
As a final touch, the 5-minute indexes on the Axis II are applied to the dial providing an extra level of depth.
Sitting in between a large and small watch, at 42mm the Axis II is a practical modern size that is highly wearable and appears more modest than its listed measurements.
This is due to the design of the case. The lugs that hold the leather watch strap have been produced to be quite short, meaning that the overall appearance of the watch on the wrist is one that could quite easily pass as a 40mm measurement.
