Firestarter is the first watch from Pinion’s new Foundation collection.

Built in batches of 100, it combines a new 38mm stainless steel case and high-domed sapphire crystal with a vibrant natural Red Agate stone dial.
Inside is the Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement.

Each Firestarter is designed, assembled, regulated and tested in England by Pinion founder Piers Berry, who remains closely connected to the watch from first sketch to final regulation.

Naturally unique

The centrepiece of Firestarter is its natural Red Agate stone dial. Cut from individual slices of stone, no two dials are the same.

Colours range from fiery orange through to deep crimson, with natural striations, bands and variations giving each dial its own individual character. The stone also has a subtle semi-translucent quality, allowing the printed dial elements to appear almost suspended above its surface.

The examples shown illustrate some of the natural variations you can expect, but the colour, pattern and markings of your watch will be unique.

Blocks of light

Rather than conventional applied hour markers, Firestarter uses three-dimensional blocks moulded from Super-LumiNova.

Raised above the surface of the dial, the solid luminous numerals and batons add depth in daylight before producing a distinctive multi-directional glow in lower-light conditions.

Refined proportions

Firestarter introduces a new 38mm stainless steel case, evolving the proportions and design language established by the Pure.

A reduced 30mm dial opening places greater emphasis on the case and bezel, while brushed surfaces meet polished edges to create a balanced multi-contrast finish.

The flatter bezel gives Firestarter a more contemporary profile, contrasted by a high-domed sapphire crystal above. Its curved surface introduces a hint of vintage character, with subtle distortion appearing around the edge of the dial when viewed from different angles.

Return to Miyota

Firestarter is powered by the Miyota 9039, a high-performance automatic movement manufactured in Japan by Citizen. It also marks a return to Miyota for Pinion, following the sell-out Atom of 2017, which was powered by the Miyota 9015.

Running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the 9039 provides a smooth sweep to the seconds hand and approximately 42 hours of power reserve. Its unidirectional automatic rotor continually replenishes power as the watch is worn.

Piers Berry, Founder, Pinion

“I first used a Miyota movement in the Atom back in 2017, and that watch went on to sell out. Nearly ten years later, Firestarter feels like the right watch to return to Miyota, but the way I make each watch remains exactly the same.”

Start the fire

For the solid stainless steel case back, Piers has once again collaborated with UK-based illustrator Keisha Karlsen to create an original Firestarter motif.

The artwork is engraved in-house by Pinion, set against a circular-brushed finish with polished edges. Each case back is also individually serial numbered.

One pair of hands

Firestarter is designed, assembled, regulated, tested and engraved in England by Pinion founder Piers Berry.

From the first design sketches through to final inspection, the same pair of hands remains closely involved at every stage. Each movement is individually regulated and tested across three positions – dial up, dial down and crown down – to help achieve consistent performance in everyday wear.

Firestarter may introduce a new movement and a new price point for Pinion, but the way each watch is created remains the same. At £690, every Firestarter still passes directly from the hands of its designer to those of its owner.

FAQs

What is the Pinion Firestarter?

Firestarter is a 38mm automatic watch and the first model in Pinion’s Foundation collection. It features a natural Red Agate stone dial, a stainless steel case, a high-domed sapphire crystal and the Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement. Each watch is designed, assembled, regulated and tested by Pinion founder Piers Berry in England.

Is every Firestarter Red Agate dial unique?

Yes. Each dial is cut from natural Red Agate, so its colour, pattern and markings will be unique. Dials can vary from fiery orange through to deep crimson and may feature natural striations, bands and other variations. The watches shown on this page illustrate this variation, but no two Firestarter dials will be exactly alike.

What movement does the Pinion Firestarter use?

Firestarter is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement, manufactured by Citizen. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), has 24 jewels and provides approximately 42 hours of power reserve. Each movement is individually regulated and tested by Pinion across three positions before the watch is completed.

Is the Pinion Firestarter made in England?

Firestarter is designed, assembled, regulated, tested and engraved in England by Pinion founder Piers Berry. Its components are sourced internationally, including its Japanese Miyota movement, before each watch is individually assembled and tested by Pinion in England.

What size is the Pinion Firestarter?

Firestarter has a 38mm stainless steel case, measuring 45mm from lug to lug and 10.9mm deep including its high-domed sapphire crystal. It has a 20mm lug width and weighs approximately 65g when fitted with its leather strap.

Is the Pinion Firestarter a limited-edition watch?

No. Firestarter is not a limited edition, but watches are produced in batches of 100. Each Firestarter has its own individual serial number engraved into the solid stainless steel case back.

How water resistant is the Pinion Firestarter?

Firestarter is water resistant to 100 metres / 10 ATM. The stainless steel case uses a push-down crown with a double O-ring fitting.

What type of lume does the Firestarter use?

Firestarter uses solid three-dimensional hour markers moulded from Super-LumiNova BG W9 rather than conventional applied metal indexes. The numerals, batons and hands are luminous, providing clear visibility in lower-light conditions while giving the dial additional depth during the day.

What is engraved on the Firestarter case back?

The solid stainless steel case back features an original Firestarter illustration created by UK-based illustrator Keisha Karlsen. The artwork is engraved in-house by Pinion, alongside the individual serial number, and is surrounded by circular-brushed and polished finishes.

Why is the watch called Firestarter?

The Firestarter name takes its inspiration from the natural Red Agate dial. Its colours can range from deep crimson to vivid fiery orange, with the natural patterns and semi-translucent character of the stone giving each watch its own individual appearance.
